Trade rumors are already surfacing for the New York Yankees, and the offseason hasn't even started.

The MLB offseason is still a couple of months away, but New York Yankees trade rumors are already bubbling to the surface.

More specifically, Bob Klapisch of NJ.com broached the subject of the Yankees potentially trading shortstop Anthony Volpe over the winter.

Volpe has missed five straight games while nursing a partially torn labrum in his shoulder, with New York opting to roll with Jose Caballero in the starting lineup.

So, would the Yankees actually try to trade Volpe this coming offseason? As much as some Yanks fans would want to believe otherwise, the answer is probably no.

Volpe's value is at low as it has ever been right now. It has been a nightmarish 2025 campaign for the 24-year-old, who is slashing .206/.268/.393 while also struggling defensively, particularly when it comes to throwing the ball to first base.

However, it should be noted that Volpe's decline really started once he initially injured his shoulder back in May. Up until that point, the former first-round draft pick was playing pretty well, having registered a .784 OPS in March and April and then a .703 OPS in May. The latter is largely unimpressive, but it's still better than what Volpe has managed the past several months.

Since June, Volpe has hit .205, .172, .191 and, in September, .095, respectively. There is no question that his bum shoulder has been affecting his swing, so it seems highly unlikely that the Bronx Bombers are going to give up on the youngster just yet.

And even with Volpe's slash line looking awful, he has still totaled 19 home runs and 70 RBI this year. Those are very solid numbers for a shortstop.

It's also important to keep in mind that Volpe won a Gold Glove in 2023 and was also terrific defensively last season. His struggles this year could absolutely be a mirage, and while he didn't injure his throwing shoulder, it stands to reason that the left shoulder issue has played a role in his sudden defensive downturn.

The Yankees wouldn't get nearly enough in return for Volpe to move him this winter. Not only that, but it's not like New York has any other legitimate solutions, either. Caballero is more of a utility man than an everyday player, and the idea of signing Bo Bichette in free agency is more rooted in fantasy than reality, especially considering that Bichette himself is subpar defensively.

Volpe's injury news almost completely confirms that he will be back with the team next season, even if a large faction of Yankees fans want him gone.
