The Cleveland Cavaliers are at Rocket Arena for the second night of a back-to-back, taking on the Golden State Warriors! I'll be live updating this page throughout the night.
The Cavs will be missing Lonzo Ball (injury management), Jarrett Allen (right finger strain), Tyrese Proctor (personal), Larry Nance Jr. (right calf), Sam Merrill (right wrist sprain), and Max Strus. The Warriors are down an extreme amount of bodies, including Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler Draymond Green, Al Horford, Seth Curry, De'Anthony Melton, LJ Cryer and Alex Toohey.
STARTERS:
Warriors - Spencer, Hield, Richard, Kuminga, Post
Cavs - Garland, Mitchell, Tyson, Hunter, Mobley
FIRST QUARTER
Bowling shoe ugly shooting start to this game for both teams. After a Darius Garland-Evan Mobley oop and a Quinten Post three, neither the Cavs nor the Warriors could make a damn thing. It's 6-5 at the 6:55 mark.
Craig Porter Jr. was the first sub off the bench at 7:24 for Donovan Mitchell. No two-man sub here.
Thomas Bryant and Dean Wade next in for Mobley and De'Andre Hunter at the five-minute mark.
Porter-Mitchell-Tomlin-Wade-Bryant are the five in now.
It hasn't gotten any prettier for either squad. Defensive struggle I guess you could call it? It's 14-12 with 3:08 left in the opening frame.
Bryant is doing a heck of a job getting a body on Golden State's frontcourt.
Qwan cuts from the baseline and CP cuts from the top when Mitchell's driving. It's a beautiful sight.
The Cavs were 7 of 25 from the field and made none of their 10 triple tries. Somehow, the Warriors were worse, going 4 of 23 but made two threes. Lots of rebounding as you may imagine, in favor of Cleveland 17-14.
END 1Q: Cavs 18, Warriors 12
GSW: Hield 3p, 4r, 2a. Post 3p, 2r. Moody 2p, 2r.
CLE: Mobley 6p, 3r. Garland 4p, 2r, 2a, stl. Bryant 2p, 5r, 1a.
SECOND QUARTER
Luke Travers comes in the game for Porter.
Mitchell cans the Cavs' first three at the 10-minute mark.
I mean, nobody can make a shot, a layup, a putback, or anything that isn't a dunk. This is wild. The Warriors cut into it with the Pat Spencer minutes. Buddy Hield has nine points. Cavs up 26-25 with 6:45 left in the first half.
It's not as if Cleveland isn't getting to the paint. It's just that the team is 7 of 23 in there right now at the 4:44 mark. That's a struggle.
Golden State starting to see some outside shots go down now. Gary Payton II is giving 'em good minutes as per usual. Spencer really is the one who turned the tide, though. He spent the whole first quarter in foul trouble. Cavs trail it 39-31 with less than three minutes until half.
The Cavs scored 130 last night on the San Antonio Spurs and have 36 points in the first half against this version of the Warriors. Try to explain the NBA to me.
HALF: Warriors 45, Cavs 36
GSW: Post 10p, 5r, 1a, blk. Hield 9p, 5r, 2a. Santos 6p, 3r, 1a. Podziemski 5p, 2r, 2a, stl.
CLE: Mobley 10p, 5r, blk. Garland 10p, 2r, 2a, 2stl. Mitchell 8p, 1r. Tomlin 2p, 7r, 2stl.
THIRD QUARTER
Well, Jaylon Tyson woke up a crowd that was lulled to sleep. Three-ball from Mitchell and then a thunderous right-hand slam in transition from Hunter after a steal.
A big reason the Cavs are outrebounding the Warriors 39-32 is Bryant and Tomlin, who have combined for 13. Unfortunately, Cleveland is missing everywhere. And yes, they're driving the basketball. Wine and gold trail 58-51 with 6:10 left and Golden State in the bonus.
Cavs getting booed as Santos knocks down a corner three and Atkinson calls for time at he 4:04 mark. They're actually outscoring the Warriors in the paint 32-26 and outrebounding them 41-36. It's the cold spell that's killing 'em because Golden State is 9 of 26 from deep.
I'm gonna get killed for this, but Cleveland's process has been completely fine this game. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if the Cavs won because they shot over 35% in the fourth quarter.
The only problem I've got is the Golden State bench doubling up the Cavs' 36-18. And Hunter is in a funky stretch the last week.
END 3Q: Warriors 72, Cavs 62
GSW: Post 12p, 7r, 2a, 2blk. Hield 9p, 6r, 3a. Santos 9p, 3r, 2a, blk. Jackson-Davis 8p, 5r, blk, stl.
CLE: Garland 14p, 4r, 2a, 2stl. Mobley 12p, 7r, blk. Mitchell 13p, 1r, 1a, blk. Tyson 9p, 7r, 3a.
FOURTH QUARTER
The Cavs got it all the way down to three and couldn't hit the big shot to cut it, and now the Warriors have gone on a run to get it back up to 88-77.
Pat Spencer may indeed be that MF. He's had a hell of a game, carrying over that momentum from Philly. That family's got some pitbull hoopers.
It's been a nightmare-ish week for De'Andre Hunter. He's better than this.
Cavs got a gift with a goaltend a couple minutes ago, then Donovan Mitchell found Evan Mobley for a dunk. They're giving the rest of what they've got. Darius Garland just tried to take a charge but it was called a foul. However, it was overturned. Cleveland down six with 2:35 left.
Post has been an absolute gem tonight.
Mobley inbounds to Mitchell on the curl and he misses the triple. You live with that every time. Cavs are gonna lose to the Warriors on their home floor on a night where absolutely nothing fell.
FINAL: Warriors 99, Cavs 94.
