The Memphis Grizzlies are now 9–12, and their shift over the past two weeks has lined up directly with Zach Edey’s return from ankle surgery.
Through eight games this season, Edey is averaging 13.6 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks. His production has climbed sharply in his past three outings, where he’s averaged 19.3 points, 17.0 rebounds and 3.3 blocks, including a performance in Sacramento with 32 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks.
Memphis has won five of its past six games, closed November on a three-game winning streak, and has posted one of the league’s best defensive ratings since Edey entered the lineup. The Grizzlies have also tightened up late in games, limiting the Clippers to 44 points in the second half on Friday and holding the Kings to 20 fourth-quarter points on Sunday.
Tuomas Iisalo described Edey’s presence as central to the team’s shift, calling his influence “everything” during the road trip. Multiple teammates have also pointed to stronger late-game execution and improved connectedness during this stretch.
The question for fans is simple:
With the Grizzlies defending at a high level since his return and Edey producing at this rate, does he have a real chance to enter the Defensive Player of the Year conversation, or is it too early in the season to consider it?
