The Miami Heat concluded their preseason stint last night with another loss, this time to the Memphis Grizzlies, with a final score of 141-125. They tied for the most games played in the preseason, six, along with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors. The Heat were the only ones in the league to go winless. The last time the organization experienced that was in 2007, which resulted in them going 15-67, tying for the worst record in franchise history.
The chances of the Heat repeating history are slim, but never impossible. However, there were some good takeaways from last night's game.
Heat; double-big lineup showed up big:
Erik Spoelstra called All-Star Bam Adebayo and sophomore Kel'el Ware into the starting lineup for a second consecutive preseason game. They both provide size, length, and versatility, which strengthens the Heat's defense.
Adebayo finished with 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block in 26 minutes of action. He had a few moments when being guarded by Memphis Grizzlies' center Jaren Jackson Jr., who won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2023. Adebayo was arguably snubbed from the award a couple of times. It's no secret that's a personal matchup for the three-time All-Star.
Ware finished with 20 points, 14 rebounds, a steal, and a block in 30 minutes of action. He recorded four double-doubles in six preseason appearances. It's known that Spoelstra has been demanding more out of him and he's been living up to the challenge.
If both bigs manage to have these types of performances consistently together, they could be regarded among the best frontcourts in the league.
Heat; Norman Powell is ready:
One of the main objectives for the Heat throughout the preseason was to get Norman Powell fully acclimated to the team. He was acquired in a blockbuster trade during the offseason. Last night, the veteran guard went off for 23 points, six assists, and a steal, including three three-pointers made.
Powell's offense will be heavily relied upon to begin the season, as All-Star guard Tyler Herro will be sidelined as he recovers from foot surgery. The former champion appears ready for the challenge.
In five preseason appearances, Powell averaged 16.2 points, two rebounds, 2.4 assists, and shot 43.9 percent from the field, 39 percent from three-point range. It could be safe to say that the 32-year-old is more than comfortable in the new system.
Heat; Lack of board control:
The Heat were outrebounded in four of their six preseason matchups. Last night against the Grizzlies was the only time that occurred with both Adebayo and Ware as starters. Jackson Jr. only grabbed three.
The Heat will need both of their bigs to be active on the glass, especially when going up against other lengthy teams, such as the Orlando Magic, New York Knicks, and Cleveland Cavaliers.
The real test will soon begin as the Heat will open their season against the Magic on Oct. 22nd and play their first home game against the Knicks on Oct. 26th.
