Not many people saw this move coming.

The Charlotte Hornets are waiving veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

Charlotte had to release a guaranteed salary ahead of its season opener next week against the Brooklyn Nets.

Dinwiddie is now an unrestricted free agent. He can join any team of his choice.

The 32-year-old Dinwiddie appeared in 79 games for the Dallas Mavericks last season. He averaged 11.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists while shooting 41.6% from the field, 33.4% from beyond the arc and 80.2% from the free-throw line.

A Colorado product, Dinwiddie has played for the Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers. He has career averages of 13.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists in the NBA.

The Hornets had the second-worst (19-63) record in the Eastern Conference last season. They haven't made the playoffs since 2016.

The top players on the Charlotte roster right now are LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, Miles Bridges and Collin Sexton. The Hornets haven't had a winning record since the 2021-22 season.

It will be fascinating to see how Charlotte does this season. The team will go as far as Ball, Miller and Bridges can take it.

Ball took his strength and conditioning very seriously this summer, an NBA executive told Roundtable. The point guard looked bigger and stronger in his arms and shoulders at Hornets media day.

"I heard LaMelo took his strength and conditioning very seriously this summer for the first time since the Hornets drafted him," the NBA executive said. "I don't know if that's going to help him from hurting his ankles again, it seems like he just has fragile ankles, but it's definitely a good sign that he's taking his body seriously."
