ORLANDO — Fresh off a championship, Orlando Magic forward Tristan da Silva is exuding confidence.
The team is going to need every bit of it moving forward.
“I think the best word that describes what I've seen from him is just that confidence,” said Magic coach Jamahl Mosley after Wednesday’s practice. “He got the experience of going to win a championship and understanding what it takes. And he brought that energy and that attitude back.”
“He's playing with a level of extreme confidence that we need from him night in, night out, whether it's just shooting the ball, the physicality of finishing at the rim, defending multiple positions. But there's a confidence that you can appreciate of what he's bringing to the table.”
As the Magic dealt with injuries to several key players last season, da Silva was thrust into the rotation with the expectation to contribute. While many rookies around the NBA were sent to the G League or placed in very limited roles, He answered the call, averaging 7.2 points through 74 games and 38 starts.
He wasted no time in the offseason, helping Germany to its first EuroBasket title in over 30 years by averaging 10.4 points on 59.3 percent shooting, including 52.9 percent from the perimeter.
“Somebody brought up a great point about Tristan. He's had essentially three camps. He did summer league, then he went overplayed for Germany, and then he's now with us with camp.”
Going into his sophomore season in the NBA, da Silva has a wealth of experience. It is the type of experience that will make the 24-year-old better mentally and physically.
However, Mosley believes da Silva already possessed all the attributes needed for success.
“I mean, he went to Colorado, so he's got a great basketball IQ,” Mosley said. But even more so, he His ability, he had that before he came in. He has a high basketball IQ. He understands the game, and that's the conversation we also had when we broke down at the end, was we have such versatility with this group, from size to strength to physicality.”
“And now it has to become the IQ that you can play with different guys on the floor, so you know where to be at any given time. And that's what he provides.”
