The Orlando Magic are winners of three-straight after Friday’s NBA Cup victory over the Brooklyn Nets. After a rocky start, it is clear Orlando is starting to find consistency, but the focus is not on wins and losses, according to coach Jamahl Mosley.
“In the beginning it was focused on the outcome,” Mosley said before Friday’s game. and we haven't focused on the outcome whether we win or lose and I think that's the more important part right now I think we're focused on the process. And I won't talk about the record because it's process driven right now.”
“The guys learning how to play off of each other, the continuity that they have, the way that we're defending, those pieces had to get cleaned up. And I think that's what we continue to focus on is the process of how we're doing it.”
“And these guys all understanding what they're being asked to do every single night that they play and have we hit those marks.”
While the Magic continue to lean into their process, below are three takeaways from Friday’s win.
For all of Brooklyn’s flaws, it did not turn the ball over nearly as much as the Magic on Friday. The Nets only registered seven for six points, while Orlando logged 19 for 21 points. This season, the Magic are averaging 16.2 turnovers, putting them toward the bottom of the league. They will have to take better care of possessions moving forward.
Simply put, Orlando is not receiving enough bench production. Averaging 31.5 points per game, the Magic are 27th out of 30 teams in bench scoring.
Tristan da Silva has been one bright spot, but he started last night in place of Paolo Banchero, and the bench was outscored 29-18. Tyus Jones has not scored in six straight games and is only averaging 1.5 points on 29 percent shooting this season, making his $7 million contract for one season look punitive.
The Magic will see some returning production once Moritz Wagner returns to the floor, but they need to figure out how to take the load off the starters regardless.
The Magic are a slightly better perimeter shooting team this season but still have plenty of issues. They connected 38.5 percent of their 3-point attempts against the Nets, a decent number largely thanks to da Silva going 5-9. Currently, Orlando ranks 21st in the league with a collective average of 34.1 percent.
