The Dallas Mavericks are just a few days into training camp in Vancouver and already dealing with a series of setbacks.

Daniel Gafford will miss two to three weeks after rolling his ankle during Tuesday’s Dallas Mavericks practice, head coach Jason Kidd said. The injury threatens his availability for the Oct. 22 season opener against San Antonio and will keep him out of the entire preseason slate.

Dallas is also monitoring several other situations. Brandon Williams is expected to miss one week with a hamstring strain, Danté Exum has yet to practice, and P.J. Washington bumped his head earlier this week but is on track to return Friday.

For Gafford, 27, durability remains a storyline. He averaged a career-best 12.3 points along with 6.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 57 games last season but missed 22 contests, including 18 due to a sprained right knee. Even so, he became the first Maverick to shoot at least 70% from the field in a season on 400 or more attempts, finishing at 70.2%.

His year included milestones: a career-high 31 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks in Charlotte on Jan. 20, the first such stat line in franchise history, and a team-record 24 straight games with at least one block. He also logged a career-best 16-game streak of double-figure scoring.

Known for his efficiency, Gafford holds the highest field goal percentage in NBA history at 71.0% among players with at least 2,000 attempts. He led the league in shooting in 2023-24 at 72.5% between Washington and Dallas, and has authored two of the top five most accurate seasons ever. His 33 consecutive made field goals in March 2024 remains the second-longest streak in league history.

The Mavericks committed to him long term this summer with a three-year, $54 million extension through 2029 after trade speculation surrounded his future at the deadline.

Training camp has centered on building defensive identity and integrating new pieces, but the early injuries have already tested depth. For a team eyeing contention, the priority is ensuring Gafford and others are healthy when the regular season begins.
