An NBA executive has heard that the San Antonio Spurs are saving their trade assets for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Bucks have won just one playoff series since winning the 2021 championship against the Phoenix Suns. Antetokounmpo evaluated his Milwaukee future this offseason, so he could do it again next offseason if the Bucks don't compete for the championship this season.
"Once LeBron (James), Steph (Curry) and KD (Kevin Durant) retire, Wemby (Victor Wembanyama) is going to become the face of the NBA and dominate the league for the next 10 to 15 years," an NBA executive told Roundtable. "I think he's going to win multiple MVPs and Defensive Player of the Year Awards.
"I also heard that the Spurs are saving all of their trade assets for Giannis. If they get Giannis next to Wemby, you are looking at the next NBA dynasty."
Under CBA rules, the Spurs can offer the Bucks Devin Vassell, Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle, a 2026 first-round pick, a 2028 first-round pick, a 2030 first-round pick (via Minnesota) and a 2031 first-round pick (via Sacramento) for Antetokounmpo.
The Bucks, of course, will only trade Antetokounmpo if he requests a trade.
The Spurs haven't made the playoffs since 2019. They would not only make the playoffs with Antetokounmpo in the fold next to Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox, but San Antonio would also be a championship contender.
The Bucks signed Antetokounmpo to a three-year, $175 million extension in October 2023. There is no no-trade clause in the contract.
One of the top players in NBA history, Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, a one-time Finals MVP, a one-time Defensive Player of the Year and a nine-time All-Star. The Greek Freak has career averages of 23.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks with the Bucks.
Antetokounmpo is not expected to request a trade this season, but if the Bucks don't go on a deep playoff run, the future Hall of Famer could ask out next summer.
