San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama had an incredible summer.
After recovering from the blood clot in his shoulder, Wembanyama worked out with Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett, played soccer in Costa Rica and Tokyo and spent 10 days at a spiritual retreat at a Shaolin temple in China.
Thanks to his busy summer, Wembanyama is now "stronger, more under control playing through physicality and increasingly comfortable with his unprecedented skill set," according to ESPN.
"My training this summer, it was brutal," Wembanyama said at Spurs media day. "This summer, I chose to do something much more violent. Maybe that takes away from some time I can spend on shooting the basketball, but it doesn’t matter. I wanted to get my body back.
"I can assure you, nobody has trained like I did this summer. And this is my best summer so far. I can tell the progress is just incredible. I feel better, I look stronger and the scale says I’m heavier. So everything is a green light."
Wembanyama has career averages of 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 3.7 blocks. The Spurs haven’t made the playoffs since 2019, but they have a promising future with Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell and rookie Dylan Harper leading the way.
"We know the type of talent he is," Fox said about Wembanyama. "I think people are learning the type of person that he is, as well. ... Him just looking at life differently, being able to travel and kind of come out with a different view on not only the sport, but on life, that's just a testament to the person that Victor is. I don't think it surprises anybody in this building."
Wembanyama has led the NBA in blocks per game and total blocks for two consecutive seasons. It wouldn't surprise anyone if Wembanyama wins multiple Defensive Player of the Year Awards during his career.
"You see how hard he works and how motivated he is," Jeremy Sochan said. "He's super exciting to see and he's ready. I think you guys are going to see a lot that's going to shock you."
