The Golden State Warriors got together for the first time in an official capacity and there was one large player missing.

Restricted free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga was a no-show at the Warriors pre-training camp media day. Needless to say, some of the Warriors were upset with his decision not to show up to an official team function.

“Any time a teammate’s not here, it sucks,” forward Draymond Green said. “Obviously not having multiple here due to the situation, it’s unfortunate because I think media day — it marks the start of something. You know, it marks the start of another NBA season.”

The situation that Green and his teammates Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler spoke of is the fact Kuminga still is without a contract on the eve of training camp. Kuminga's decision to prolong the negotiations are also precluding the Warriors from officially signing center Al Horford and guard De'Anthony Melton. The two did not appear at the media day event as they are not under contract.

“I think it sucks for all those guys involved, including JK,” Green said. “You don’t get the opportunity to start your thing how you normally start your thing.”

Kuminga has been tendered a qualifying offer to play one season for $7.9 million. He would also control his ability to be traded. The offer expires at 9 p.m. local time Wednesday, unless Kuminga and the team agree to extend his restricted free agency until an accord could be struck.

The players seem to be talking about "the situation". There are contingency plans being made in the event he fails to come to terms soon.

“We talk about it for sure,” Curry said. “As leaders on the team, you have to acknowledge what’s going on and don’t make it more than what it is, other than a team trying to figure out the situation that’s in front of us and the challenge that’s in front of us."

Curry, who is entering his 17th season in the league, said he respects the process and does not hold any ill-will toward his teammate.

“This is a little different because you have a guy that’s trying to figure out his situation, and we respect that process,” Curry said. “It’s going to play out, and when he’s here — ready to work, like we expect him to be locked in on doing what he needs to do to help us win.”

When it was Butler's turn to speak and opine on the matter, he said he loves Kuminga and just wants it to get worked out sooner rather than later.

“I hope it gets resolved,” Butler said at his first Warriors media day. “I know what that is like. I’ve been in this league going on 15 years now and it will get handled and I know that both sides will be happy in the end. We all love JK and we all want this organization to be happy and we’re going to let JK and this organization figure it out.”
