Rookie Tre Johnson sidelined for weeks with hip strain, revealing a long-hidden battle and explaining past minute restrictions.

Washington Wizards rookie Tre Johnson will be out at least a couple of weeks with a strained left hip flexor, head coach Brian Keefe announced.

Keefe said the injury stems back to his freshman season at Texas, signaling Johnson has been playing through pain for months.

Keefe added Johnson will be reevaluated after a couple weeks.

The news comes following Johnson's absence vs Chicago, which was the first missed game of his career.  Against Toronto on Friday, Johnson scored a team-high 12 points in the first half, but was mostly limited in his minutes in the second half.

Many fans have questioned Keefe's minutes for Johnson, wondering why he wasn't playing more significant minutes.  Keefe provided an answer to that question.

He revealed Johnson had been playing on an unannounced minutes restriction. Keefe said his injury didn't impact the way he was used on the floor.

Johnson averaged 22.9 minutes per game in the 15 games he's played, which is 8th most among NBA rookies.

The only NBA rookies that average over 30 minutes are VJ Edgecombe, Cooper Flagg, and Kon Knueppel.

The injury bothering Johnson is likely the reason why his minutes were relatively low over his last 3 contests, as he played under 20 in all three.

Johnson put up solid numbers in his limited action, knocking down multiple three pointers in 5 of his 15 contests.

Washington looks to end its 14-game losing skid tomorrow against Atlanta, and they'll now have to rely elsewhere for bench production.
