The injury bug has hit the Washington Wizards again, this time dealing a blow to the backcourt with Corey Kispert now battling a thumb injury.
“Guard-forward Corey Kispert sustained a fracture to the tip of his right thumb in the third quarter of the Wizards’ game against the Atlanta Hawks on Nov. 25. The injury will be treated conservatively, and Kispert’s recovery status will be updated as appropriate,” the Washington Wizards announced on Thanksgiving morning.
Kispert left midway through the third quarter in Tuesday’s 132-113 win vs. Atlanta.
“We’ll know more here. Just finding out about it myself after the game. He was pulled during the middle of the third quarter, don’t have anything more than that right now,” Keefe added postgame.
Kispert is averaged 8.9 points on a career-high 50.5% shooting from the field and 40.3% from three in nearly 20 minutes per game while drawing two starts in 17 appearances during the 2025-26 season. The former Gonzaga star finished with 19 points in 24 minutes against Atlanta, his second consecutive game scoring double figures after scoring 20 points in a 121-120 loss on Nov. 22.
The absence of the fifth-year guard-forward is the latest blow for head coach Brian Keefe and the Wizards after rookie guard Tre Johnson was ruled out until at least Dec. 17 after suffering a strained left hip flexor, likely elevating Cam Whitmore into an expanded role into December.

“We’ll know more here in a couple of weeks, but he’s had a good start to the season for a guy who was playing through a lot of pain, averaging almost 12 points a game and close to 40 percent from 3,” Keefe said following the news. “I’ve been impressed with him and his ability to play through some pain. That’s a pretty tough kid right there.”
Meanwhile, both center Marvin Bagley III and forward Kyshawn George were initially game-time decisions vs. Atlanta before being ruled out with Bagley battling a hip injury and George an illness.
Still, the Wizards were able to overcome depth concerns to snap a 14-game losing streak on Tuesday anchored by a season-high 46 points from CJ McCollum, tying a franchise record for the most made threes (ten) in a game.
“I thought we were trending up on our trip, the way we were passing, moving, sharing the ball. I think that was an example of stuff that we stuck with and have gotten better at,” Keefe said after the win. “Obviously we made shots tonight but the ball was flying around and we were pushing the pace, playing the style that we want to play, the identity we want to play to which is start with defense, get out in transition and then really share it. And I thought we did that tonight terrific.”
Despite the recent win, Washington has been eliminated from the NBA Cup with two losses but will look to string together its first win streak of the season when they travel to face Indiana on Friday night.
