That would be Alabama defensive coordinator, Kane Wommack.
Sure, he was thrilled that the Crimson Tide came out with the win, who wouldn’t? But it was the miscues on the defensive end that made this game a whole lot closer than it should’ve been.
Leading up to Week 5, Wommack made it crystal clear that he wanted his guys to zero in on stopping the run.
Georgia runs the ball at a top-five rate in the FBS, and have used its quarterback, Gunner Stockton as a threat on the ground as well. And dating back to Week 1 against Florida State, the Crimson Tide were exposed.
“Those (rushes) that the ball got outside on us and we didn’t take the air out of the ball and we gave really good athletes space to make a play, we didn’t finish,” Wommack said. “That’s unacceptable. We’ve got to get those things fixed.”
A lot of that lays on cornerback Domani Jackson, who had a very forgettable game, despite making a few solid plays.
The gaffes that he made though were critical, and it helped Georgia march down the field with ease. Per PFF, Jackson had the worst run-defense grade on the team with a 40.5.
Any time running backs would approach him, and attempt to get to the edge, they did it with ease, taking advantage of his miscalculated angles.
On both of these videos, you can clearly see Jackson getting beat, setting up the Bulldogs for an explosive run.
Wommack made it clear that once you’re in the SEC, a microscope is on you at all times, and you’ll be ousted if you don’t address the mistakes.
“In the SEC you have to answer for the things that you put on tape and we’re certainly going to answer for those things.”
For the most part, the interior run defense was solid. LT Overton made a massive stop on 4th and 1 in the fourth quarter that saved the game for the Tide, and safety Bray Hubbard has been a heat-seeking missile since Week 1.
But anything on the outside has been a total bust for them, and teams are soon going to figure out that the one way to beat Alabama is to head to the outside and run past since the defensive backs are slow to recover.
The Crimson Tide will have another big test in front of them, with Diego Pavia and Vanderbilt coming into town. Pavia can put the burners on if needed, so Saturday will be all about neutralizing the quarterback, and limiting runs to the outside.
Kickoff takes place at Bryant-Denny Stadium at 3:30 p.m. ET / 2:30 CT. The game will be broadcasted on ABC.
