Coooooooooooop!
That’s the sound Alabama fans made when former Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper caught a touchdown pass for the Crimson Tide. And it’s the sound Raiders fans are making after Cooper, a five-time pro bowler, shocked Raider Nation with a retirement announcement on Thursday.
The announcement came as a complete shock to Raiders fans and staff considering Cooper had just signed a one year deal with the Raiders on August 26th of this year. The Raiders were preparing for their season opener against the Patriots on Sunday. A game that many expected Cooper to start in.
Raiders’ offensive coordinator Chip Kelly shared his thoughts about Cooper’s announcement:“It’s unfortunate because I think he's a heck of a football player," Kelly said. "... But he knows in his heart what he wants to do so I wish him the best.”
Cooper will forever be known as one of the best wide receivers of all time. During his time at Alabama from 2011-2013, Cooper racked up an astonishing 3,463 yards receiving and 31 touchdowns.
He then went on to be the 4th overall draft pick in the 2015 NFL Draft to the Oakland Raiders, where he spent several seasons before making moves to Dallas, Cleveland, and Buffalo. Cooper ends his NFL career with over 10,000 yards receiving and 64 touchdowns.
What a legend.
Roll Tide forever, Coop.
