Given that Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer was given the nearly impossible task of replacing the legendary Nick Saban, there’s certainly been some growing pains in Tuscaloosa.
The Week 1 loss to Florida State, who went 2-10 last season, was definitely one of them, and it put the Alabama program in a position that it hasn’t felt since 2006 – staring at an 0-1 deficit to start a season.
Florida State certainly isn’t the program it was last season. It welcomed a myriad of transfers that changed the outlook of the Seminoles, and they caught the Crimson Tide off guard on August 30 by coming out on top 31-17.
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer spoke to the press following the Week 1 loss after having a day to decompress and realize what had happened.
Here are three observations from DeBoer's Monday press conference.
Big shocker here, but DeBoer was not happy.
“How I can address the team is completely different than a year ago. We don’t need to speak in those terms, but it feels different. There’s more of a flat-out upset,” he told the press on Monday afternoon.
If you saw the game, you can tell that the effort was completely different from the narrative coming out of camp.
There was a lot of lethargy, hesitancy, and a feeling of uncertainty from the opener against Florida State.
“Certainly disappointed in some effort situations… It surprises you sometimes because of the effort they gave day in and day out… we got to be quicker to get to a spot and do our job.”
It’s a different type of message that Bama fans are used to, especially when watching Saban deliver a presser where he was often more blunt, more to the point, and more emphatic on what the team needed to do better. DeBoer, on the other hand, seems to soften the blow to the public while delivering a stronger message to the locker room.
Alabama is still dealing with several injuries, including to a number of its starters.
DeBoer revealed on Monday that incoming transfer wide receiver from Miami, Isaiah Horton, has been dealing with a lower-body injury and felt it before kickoff. He stated that Horton “kept fighting” and was limited, but he expects him to be a full-go by the end of the week.
Superstar receiver Ryan Williams is still in concussion protocol, and after seeing how much he struggled getting off the field, it doesn’t seem like he’ll be available for the home opener against UL Monroe.
Starting guard Jaeden Roberts was actually fully cleared for Week 1’s game and could’ve gone if needed, but ultimately didn’t. It didn’t seem to be a problem, since the interior did a decent job at protecting the quarterback – it was more of the tackles who struggled.
Defensive lineman Jah-Marien Latham suffered a lower-body injury in Tallahassee, and his status is currently listed as day-to-day.
Other than that, starting DL Tim Keenan and RB Jam Miller’s statuses are still week-to-week and will miss Week 2.
It’s a bit peculiar to think that after letting up multiple explosive plays and letting quarterback Tommy Castellanos run all over your defense, the head coach, of all people, believed they were honed in defensively.
Again, DeBoer is nowhere near the personality Saban was, and you’re not going to get the same bluntness from him that Saban typically offered after games.
“Defensively, I felt we were pretty honed in. We went back to the practice film, and it was pretty much identical to what we saw. So we’re just trying to figure out why we were one step – or why our communication was a little bit slower.”
You don’t want to pile on a team whose morale is already at an all-time low, but were we watching the same thing?
First, he began the press conference stating how upset he was with the effort, and then saying they were honed in on the defensive end, so which one is it?
You can feel like, structurally, they followed the schemes as they planned, but it was clear that the Tide was a step slow compared to their counterparts.
Deonte Lawson looked like he was playing at 70% strength and Justin Jefferson was manhandled. Not only that, safety Bray Hubbard, who was the type of player who gave 110% last season, seemed like he was giving half of that effort on Saturday.
With UL Monroe coming into town on Week 2, the Crimson Tide better hope that they show up with more of an urgency.
During the offseason, Castellanos called out Alabama, saying that "Saban can't save them anymore," and after backing it up, a once proud program is now vulnerable for the first time in over a decade.
