Hamstring woes sideline Kansas phenom Darryn Peterson, casting doubt on his highly anticipated freshman showdown with Duke's Cameron Boozer.

Kansas Preseason All-American Darryn Peterson's "Immediate Future" Is Uncertain.

The billing for No. 5 Duke's matchup with No. 24 Kansas in the Champion's Classic was as simple as it was intriguing: Perhaps the two best freshmen of the country will meet inside Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

However, while Blue Devil star Cameron Boozer will be on the floor, it's uncertain if Kansas phenom Darryn Peterson will join him. After Kansas' loss at North Carolina, Peterson has missed two games with a hamstring injury. Jayhawks head coach Bill Self expressed some concern about Peterson's status over the weekend.

"We’re not obviously gonna have him for at least for the immediate future. I just don’t know how long that’ll be," Self said following a home win over Princeton on Saturday. "I'm not going to put him out there until he feels well.

Self added, "We got to get him where he's not hesitant to play. We have seen him play, and he's pretty good. We still haven't seen him whole yet. Think about that."

Peterson exceeded the 20-point threshold in both of the games that he appeared in. In the small sample, he shot 60 percent from the floor (15 of 25) and 50 percent from three-point range (6 of 12).

Last week, Self indicated that Peterson had been playing through hamstring soreness for weeks. However, the only sign of trouble — health-wise — was when Peterson didn't finish an exhibition against Louisville due to cramps.

He also exited the second half of Kansas' opening rout of Green Bay with a cramping issue.

Along with BYU's AJ Dybantsa, Boozer and Peterson are viewed as the top freshmen of a loaded class nationally. UNC forward Caleb Wilson and Louisville guard Mikel Brown Jr. have also enjoyed impressive starts to the season.

With or without Peterson in action, Boozer will look to help Duke to its first 5-0 start under Jon Scheyer. Speaking of Scheyer, the third-year Blue Devils coach is 0-2 against the Jayhawks.

Two years ago, Kansas handed Scheyer his first career loss in Indianapolis. Last season, the Jayhawks survived a thriller — 75-72 — in Las Vegas.

Tip-off from New York City is set for 9 p.m. on Tuesday night. The game will be televised on ESPN.
