While Duke scheduling Niagara to visit Cameron Indoor Stadium is a neat gesture towards visiting head coach Greg Paulus, who was once a memorable guard for Blue Devils, Friday night's 100-42 romp provided an opportunity for the Blue Devils to experiment with rotations and lineups.
Barely three minutes into the game, Duke coach Jon Scheyer summoned four new players off the bench. He used combinations we would have never seen during the high-major wins over Kansas and Texas earlier this month.
But as a three-game, non-conference gauntlet of No. 21 Arkansas, No. 10 Florida and No. 17 Michigan State looms beginning on Thanksgiving Day next week, Duke has yet to establish a primary point guard.
Scheyer's two options are third-year player Caleb Foster and freshman Cayden Boozer. Entering Friday night, both players averaged 22 minutes per game of floor time this season.
Foster has started the first six games. After canning three of his four 3-point attempts against Niagara, he is now shooting 50 percent (10 for 20) from the perimeter this season. Foster, who finished with 10 points, has a career scoring average of 6.2 points per game.
Then there's freshman Cayden Boozer, who — unlike his twin brother and Blue Devil teammate Cameron — comes off of the bench. Despite this, Boozer ran the point during the final seven minutes of Duke's win over Kansas.
On Friday night, Boozer poured in 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting with three made triples. And while he has a ways to go to match Foster's defensive presence, Boozer has produced a higher assists average (3.8) than his upperclassman back-court mate (2.8) so far this season.
Prior to the holiday clash with John Calipari's Razaorbacks, Duke will remain at home for its first one-day prep of the season — a scheduling tactic Scheyer has deployed to simulate the quick turnarounds in the NCAA Tournament — against Howard.
Tip-off time is set for 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
