Manny Diaz knew the assignment today. It was to turn the page from Duke's disappointing ACC title hope ending loss to Virginia and towards making a bowl game. And also handling business against your biggest rival and a six-time Super Bowl winning head coach in Bill BelichickDuke very easily could have folded up shop and just mailed it in after last week, but neither Manny Diaz or the players we spoke to after the game had that energy. It showed today.
Going a step further, Manny Diaz had some trickery up his sleeve. One thing he pointed out after the win at Clemson was that you had to be "gutsy" if you're going to go to a place like Death Valley and get a win.
Kenan Stadium isn't Death Valley. That's not the point. The point is, Manny Diaz continues to show he's got the marbles to take chances even with the game on the line.
On two different occasions, tonight, Manny Diaz out schemed Bill Belichick. Someone who was known in the NFL for doing exactly that to whichever coach was across the field from him.
On Duke's second touchdown drive of the game, Manny Diaz schemed up what's known as the "Offensive Lineman Ineligible Receiver Package". It's something that Belichick terrorized John Harbaugh and the Ravens with in the Divisional round of the 2015 playoffs.
Things felt relatively comfortable for the Devils after they scored on their first drive of the second half to make it 24-10. That's when Duke's defense started to "Duke defense".
Gio Lopez started to find his rhythm with the passing game on the Heels' first drive of the second half, putting together a ten play drive that resulted in UNC finding the end zone and successfully going for two to cut the Devils lead to six.
Then, on UNC's next drive down Davion Gause got it going out of the backfield. He managed to punch it in giving the Heels a 25-24 lead.
This is where the next bit of Manny Diaz schemery comes in. Darian Mensah started to find a rhythm again to get into UNC territory, but it led to a 4th and 3 field goal attempt. Except it wasn't. The ball was snapped to Duke kicker, Todd Pelino, then he scrambled for a 26 yard first down. Duke would take the lead two plays later with a touchdown and two point conversion.
Manny Diaz said after the Clemson win that in order to win in Death Valley you had to be "gutsy". It's pretty clear that we saw even more of that today. As a result, a bowl-berth and the Victory Bell are heading back to Durham.
