It's still very early in the college basketball season, but with a team like Duke and having a star player in Cameron Boozer, it's fair to already look at who could win the Freshman of the Year award.
Boozer could even be the National Player of the Year Award, considering the success he's found in the early stages of the season.
As things currently stand, there would be a tough argument to be made that he hasn't been the best freshman in the country, although AJ Dybantsa at BYU has played very well, averaging 20.3 points and 6.8 rebounds.
When looking at what Boozer has done, after he just put up an 18-point and 10-rebound game against Kansas at Madison Square Garden, I have him a bit higher than Dybantsa currently.
Unfortunately for Boozer, although it’s very early again, ESPN's Myron Medcalf doesn't, naming him the second favorite to win the Freshman of the Year Award.
He stated that Boozer had struggled against Kansas in some sense, but he still ended up with a great stat line.
“Although Boozer struggled early in Duke's win over Kansas at Tuesday's Champions Classic, he still finished with an admirable stat line. The performance on the big stage of Madison Square Garden was more proof that even on an off night, Boozer still manages to play a vital role for his team.
“The two-time Gatorade Player of the Year started his college career with a breakout effort in an exhibition win over Tennessee before he registered a double-double in a season-opening victory against Texas. There was more preseason buzz around Dybantsa, and Peterson is the projected No. 1 pick in ESPN's latest NBA mock draft, but Boozer has already made the case that he's as good as any freshman -- or player, for that matter -- in America,” Medcalf wrote.
Again, this is still very early to speak about, but it's something that has to be talked about.
He's in a very good position to bring home some hardware this year, but for Boozer and Duke, the bigger focus will be on both sides walking away with a ring.
