Florida State head coach Mike Norvell announced today that junior cornerback Quindarrius Jones will miss the rest of the season due to an unspecified injury suffered against Miami on Saturday night.
The news is a blow to a secondary that had back-to-back weeks struggling to defend the pass. Jones was a key member of FSU's rotation in the secondary, having earned his first start in week two against East Texas A&M. The Meridian, Miss., native totaled seven tackles and one pass defended in five games.
Jones will not be eligible by rule for a medical redshirt because he appeared in five games. The minimum for a medical redshirt is four games, but he could appeal to possibly earn an extra year.
Norvell shared the news at his Monday press conference, saying that Jones' injury requires surgery and will leave him unavailable for the rest of the year. Norvell said Jones had been operating as the third corner coming into the game when switching to pass defense formations. The Noles head coach expects it will take several people to help replace Jones' place in the lineup.
FSU gave up 241 passing yards to Miami quarterback Carson Beck on Saturday night. All four of UM's touchdowns came through the air, as well as several key third-down conversions.
"It's an open-door opportunity for somebody else, and we've got to continue to be better within our secondary," Norvell said. "Obviously, it's a group that has to go take a step this week."
FSU's next opponent, Pitt, is averaging 307 passing yards per game and 3.2 passing touchdowns per game. The Panthers threw for 331 yards in a 48-7 blowout of Boston College last weekend. Whoever steps in for Jones will immediately face a tough test.
