Mike Norvell will remain Florida State's head football coach through the remainder of the season, FSU Athletic Director Michael Halford announced today.
Halford said in a statement today that Norvell's job status and the state of the program will be evaluated "at season's end." After a 3-0 start and a rise to the AP Top 10, Norvell's team is now 3-4 after losing four straight ACC games.
Speculation has swirled since Saturday night's loss at Stanford that FSU was considering the option of letting Norvell go and triggering his $54 million buyout.
Alford's statement going into the Off Week will provide the Seminoles with more clarity as they prepare for the back end of the schedule.
In the statement, Alford expressed "deep disappointment" when the results aren't to the standard FSU and its fans expect. Notably, Alford's one mention of Norvell tied FSU's support of the coach specifically, and only, to the 2025 season.
"Florida State football benefits from unmatched passionate support from the entire FSU family, and the commitment to our football program is unwavering," Alford's statement reads. "We rightfully have high expectations in everything we do to represent Florida State in the manner that built our reputation as one of college football's best programs, cultivating an extraordinary group of supporters nationally and globally. We embrace those expectations while also sharing the deep disappointment when results on the field are short of that standard.
"As we continue to move forward this season, our comprehensive assessment of the football program will be completed at season's end. Meanwhile, we are fully committed to helping Coach Norvell and the 2025 Seminoles strongly rebound in the coming weeks."
The Seminoles, and seemingly Norvell, have five games left on the schedule following this weekend's break from action:
vs Wake Forest
at Clemson
vs Virginia Tech
at North Carolina State
at Florida
As of just a few weeks ago, the Seminoles likely would have been favored in all of those games. Already, two of their future opponents - Virginia Tech and in-state rival Florida - have fired their head coaches. Given recent results, however, it wouldn't be surprising for FSU to lose any or all of those matchups.
Norvell and FSU are still searching for their first ACC win since September of 2024. The Seminoles are 5-15 under Norvell since he led them to a 13-0 start in 2023. Even winning all five remaining games may not be enough to save Norvell's job. Losing more than two - and thus guaranteeing a losing record - would almost certainly spell the end.
