BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- At the halfway point of the college football season, the Heisman Trophy race remains wide open — and Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza is climbing fast.

Mendoza is coming off a key performance against another Heisman hopeful, Oregon quarterback Dante Moore. Mendoza finished 20-of-31 passing for 215 total yards, while Moore went 21-of-34 for 186 yards and two interceptions. The matchup helped elevate Mendoza’s standing in the Heisman conversation, placing him firmly among this season’s top contenders.

    Heisman Trophy Contenders

    Carson Beck, QB, Miami (Fla.)

Miami continues to sit near the top of the AP Top 25 poll behind a dynamic offense and defense. Beck has been steady all season, totaling 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. Some argue his Heisman buzz stems from Miami’s undefeated record, but Beck’s 74% completion rate in conference play speaks for itself. Still, he’ll need a few more statement performances to separate himself from the pack.

    Ty Sampson, QB, Alabama

It wouldn’t be a Heisman race without an Alabama quarterback in the mix. Sampson has been a standout, throwing for 1,678 yards, 16 touchdowns and just one interception. His accuracy and consistency have anchored the Crimson Tide offense, and as long as Alabama keeps winning, Sampson’s Heisman chances will only improve.

    Fernando Mendoza, QB, Indiana

It would be a mistake to overlook what Mendoza and the Hoosiers are doing this season. The sophomore quarterback has totaled 1,423 yards, 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions through six games. His poise in the pocket, ability to avoid pressure and sharp decision-making have been key to Indiana’s rise. Mendoza’s performance is turning heads — and giving the Hoosiers national credibility.

    Jeremiah Smith, WR, Ohio State

Many consider Smith the best player in college football right now — and it’s hard to argue. With 40 receptions for 505 yards and seven touchdowns, he’s been nearly unstoppable. Though his production has dipped slightly in recent weeks, the Buckeyes remain the No. 1 team in the country. If Smith stays consistent through the second half of the season, he’ll stay firmly in the Heisman mix.

    Slipping Away From Heisman

    Dante Moore, QB, Oregon

Oregon’s loss hurts Moore’s chances of taking home the Heisman Trophy. He remains in the conversation but will need strong performances for the rest of the season to stay in contention. Moore has 1,396 yards and 15 touchdowns, but his three interceptions tie him with Miami’s Beck for the most among the contenders. Moore is a talented quarterback on a good team, but with only one ranked opponent left on the schedule, he’ll have to produce.
