Kansas State notched another blowout victory to open the season, defeating Bellarmine by 27 points Saturday night.
Well, good. These are the types of dominant performances the Wildcats need, and it would probably say more about the team if they lost. Kansas State coach Jerome Tang was happy with the result, lauding David Castillo's career-high 19-point performance.
"His strength is definitely something that showed up," Tang said in his postgame interview. "I think even from last game to this game, he’s putting a ton of work on his shooting. He can really shoot the ball. Every time he shoots it, I think it’s going in."
Integrating Castillo in the lineup gives Kansas State more offensive punch, in addition to the main backcourt stars.
"I’m so proud of David, and I’m so proud of all these dudes," Tang said. "We've got weapons, so teams are gonna have to figure out what they’re gonna take away, and you can’t take everything away. Khamari had a great game, I thought Dorin had really good minutes when he was in there. Just having another big who doesn’t shoot the ball, so you can guard traditionally. He was really good. Elias is improving, Mobi's improving, so I’m really pleased with how we’re coming along."
Still, Tang was critical of the defensive lapses. Despite allowing just 20 percent shooting on the night, Tang was frustrated with the number of finishes at the rim.
"When your schedule gets a little tougher, usually that means you’re still playing good guards, but you’re probably playing bigger forwards who are not gonna stretch you and play five out," Tang said. "So you get to guard a little bit more traditionally, and all the stuff we’ve been working on, we get to try and implement."
P.J. Haggerty got more tough love from Tang, who still thinks there is a higher ceiling the former Memphis star can reach.
"I still don’t think P.J. Haggerty's played well," Tang said. "He was just okay. 11 assists is good and all that, but like there’s a whole other level he can get to. And he’ll get there, because this is like average PJ. Special PJ is gonna come, but that’s just what he signed up for. Love having him, though. He can get a shot, he can make a play for somebody else, he’s starting to read a bunch of stuff out there and make calls. Love that about him, but he’s a double-double guy every night. He’s capable of having double-digit assists every night, he’s capable of being an 11-to-one turnover guy. He’s capable of all that."
