Kansas coach Bill Self provided an update on freshman guard Darryn Peterson after the standout missed his second consecutive game Saturday. What was initially described as a cramping issue has developed into a hamstring injury, keeping Peterson on the bench.
“We don't know,” Self said. “We've got some things to discuss, and we're looking at it. He's getting the best treatment, but he's got tightness in his right hamstring. He wants to be out there so bad, but I'm not going to put him out there until he feels well.”
Self noted that Kansas’ focus is on ensuring Peterson is fully comfortable before returning.
“You can say or think, Well, we're trying to win the battle. Well, yeah, we are, but the battle is not nearly as important as the long-term, so to speak, and we have got to get him where he's not hesitant to play,” he said.
Self added that Peterson will be out for the ‘immediate future.’
“We're not obviously going to have him, at least for the immediate future. I just don't know how long that will be.”
Peterson's status for Tuesday’s Champions Classic against Duke remains unclear. Self did not give a definitive answer when asked, only reiterating that Kansas does not expect to have him back in the ‘immediate future.’
