Kansas men’s basketball head coach Bill Self says freshman guard Darryn Peterson is expected to be available for Sunday’s rivalry matchup against Missouri, marking his first action since early November.
Peterson has practiced the last two days, and barring any setbacks, Self said the staff is preparing as if the former five-star guard will play.
“He’s practiced the last two days, so he should be available unless he has a setback between now and game time,” Self said. “We wouldn’t put him out there unless he was full speed.”
Peterson has missed seven straight games with a hamstring injury but has pushed to return.
“He’s tried his ass off to get back sooner,” Self said. “I’m really looking forward to having him back out there, more so for him than anything else.”
Self stressed that Peterson won’t play unless he’s completely healthy.
“He hasn’t played in a while, so he won’t be the guy on Sunday that he’ll be a month from now,” Self said. “But I still believe he can be pretty effective.”
Peterson appeared in just two games before the injury, averaging 21.5 points and giving Kansas a scoring punch it lacked at times during his absence. The Jayhawks take on Missouri in the Border Showdown on Sunday. Tipoff at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City is set for noon CST, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
