The LSU Tigers played two quarters of good football on Saturday night against the Texas A&M Aggies. Unfortunately, for Brian Kelly and company, games consist of four quarters.
After heading into the locker rooms with an 18-14 lead, the Tigers had a horrendous second half and went on to lose 49-25.
There was essentially nothing that looked good for LSU in the second half.
One of the worst stats to come out of the Tigers' offense from this game was that star freshman running back Harlem Berry had just one rush for three yards after he scored the go-ahead touchdown late in the second quarter.
Offensive coordinator Joe Sloan has made plenty of questionable decisions this season. The usage of his playmakers in this game was among the worst.
Instead of riding the hot hands, it was more drives that ended in passes that fell short of the line to gain before even getting to the receivers' hands.
No one who has been begging for a change at head coach will be dissuaded by this performance. More likely is that new fans will be on the bandwagon.
Multiple times throughout the night, the LSU student section chanted "fire Brian Kelly." Those chants will only get louder as the season progresses.
A trip to Tuscaloosa is awaiting the Tigers when they come out of the bye week, which means 5-4 is a real possibility. LSU is in a bad spot right now, without much to look forward to.
"It's just so unusual to see the stadium so empty," said ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit in the final minutes of the game.
That encapsulates the feeling around the program. No one expected to see the Tigers so down in the dumps this season.
Eight games into the year, it feels more shocking to see any fans sticking through the end of a rivalry matchup.
Senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier had one of his weakest games in purple and gold on Saturday night. He was just 22-of-35 for 168 yards with a touchdown.
It was a combination of missed throws and poor play calls that kept LSU out of scoring position for the entire second half with Nussmeier in the game.
Michael Van Buren Jr. entered the game for the final drive, and his ability to run the ball added some versatility to the offense, but it was too little too late. He finished 3-of-4 passing for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Blake Baker and the Tigers defense's inability to stop rushing quarterbacks continues to plague them. Marcel Reed got whatever he wanted on the ground, picking up 108 yards and two scores on 13 rushes.
The Aggies as a whole averaged six yards per carry before they started kneeling the ball out.
Few people on the LSU sideline will be able to leave Tiger Stadium with their heads held high.
It was one of the more disappointing losses for LSU in years, only made worse by the "fire Kelly" chants that took over the broadcast as the clock hit zero.
