It was a familiar feeling for LSU Tigers fans for much of Saturday night. The defense was lights out and the offense left plenty to be desired. Either way, the Tigers took home a 20-10victory over the Florida Gators.
Starting with anyone other than sophomore Safety Dashawn Spears would be malpractice. He had quite the breakout night and was a large part of the reason that LSU won the game.
Spears was a playmaker in high school for Denham Springs, and he continued that tonight with his first two interceptions of his career. The second one was brought back for a touchdown that gave the Tigers the crucial two-score lead.
The safeties overall had a stellar night. Cooley had nine tackles with an interception, and AJ Haulcy had six tackles and another interception.
In all, LSU's defense forced a whopping five interceptions on the night. Star freshman DJ Pickett had his first career pick late.
This was also a massive night for linebacker Davhon Keys, who had come in for Whit Weeks. Keys had a career-high 11 tackles a week ago and has now topped that with a 14-tackle night. One went for a loss, and he had half a sack.
Any time that a defense can hold an SEC team to just 10 points, that is a major win. No matter who the opponent is.
The run defense was stout, keeping the Gators to just 2.9 yards per rush as a team.
The issue is that the offense just has not looked good this season. They scored just 13 points on their own and many of the same issues popped up. The run game couldn't get going and Garrett Nussmeier reverted to the poor decision making on a late interception that could have been disastrous.
Nussmeier was 15-of-27 on the day for 220 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He can make Heisman-level throws, but this offense doesn't seem to be doing him any favors in actually winning the award.
It wasn't all on Nussmeier, by any means. The biggest problems popping up has been poor communications and overly-conservative play calling. Coaching has been questioned all season long and this performance won't keep that from happening further.
Like last week, a long run towards the end makes the numbers look better for the run game. Durham had a 51-yard rush towards the end that brought him up to 93 on the day.
Without that run, the team averaged just 1.88 yards per carry.
The Tigers have been able to survive the mistakes for now, but once a team pushes back they could be in trouble.
For now, though, Brian Kelly and LSU will be able to enjoy their first 3-0 start together.
