There has been little news about Lane Kiffin's defensive staff for the LSU Tigers as the team has been working hard to retain Blake Baker as the defensive coordinator, but it looks like they won't be able to.
Fletcher Mackel of WDSU reported on Thursday afternoon that "all signs point" towards Tigers defensive coordinator Blake Baker becoming the next head coach of the Tulane Green Wave.
Mackel reported that a deal is not currently done, but could be finalized within the next 24 hours, and Baker is expected to be announced by the school this weekend. It seems like all but official.
News had come out that Baker had recently interviewed for both this position and the Memphis Tigers opening. The Green Wave always seemed like the most likely option for the 43-year-old coach, as it is his alma mater and helps him remain in-state.
He has coached in Louisiana for most of the last decade, and his wife is from Mandeville, so this seems like the best spot for him. Perhaps it could turn into a Kenny Dillingham situation, where he sticks with his alma mater for years, putting an end to Tulane's recent trend of change.
Baker has helped transform the LSU defense from porous to one of the best units in the country. It's a well-earned promotion for Baker, but it will leave the Tigers in a bit of a pickle for this class.
Several top defensive recruits, Lamar Brown included, remain unsigned during this early signing period as they wait to see what is going to happen with LSU's staff. With the clock running out, it could be hard to get them to sign before the window closes after Friday.
Baker also has a great relationship with the rest of the Tigers' defensive assistants, obviously, and will likely bring some over with him. People like Frank Wilson and Corey Raymond could be names to watch. It could end up disastrous for LSU if they end up recruiting against them in state for teh next few years.
