In a confusing turn of events, the meeting between the Florida Gators and Tulane Green Wave head coach Jon Sumrall has been cancelled per On3's Pete Nakos.
On Wednesday afternoon, Zach Abolverdi reported that the two parties would meet on Thursday to discuss the head coaching job.
Just about an hour after that news was released, Nakos stepped in to say that the meeting was cancelled and Sumrall was removing his name from consideration for that job. The coaching carousel has already been wild this year and it doesn't seem to be getting any calmer with two weeks left in the season.
Sumrall's name is still connected to a handful of SEC jobs. The LSU Tigers, Auburn Tigers and Kentucky Wildcats have all had varying levels of reported interest. The meeting with the Gators would have been the first interview that he had taken this year, at least to public knowledge.
The 43-year-old currently has the Green Wave sitting at 8-2 and in line for an appearance in the College Football Playoff as the highest-ranked Group of Five school at No. 24.
Florida fans seemed to be apprehensive of hiring another Group of Five coach after how Billy Napier turned out after coming from the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.
That apprehension is the same reason why the Tigers ended up taking Napier off their big board last time, but there is a better view of Sumrall this time. Even if he doesn't get the job at LSU, it won't be because he's coming from a smaller school.
Sumrall remains a "Plan B" option for the Tigers if they end up missing out on Lane Kiffin, who is the current top target. He has built solid ties in Louisiana and, perhaps most importantly, knows how to build a strong culture in today's college football world. That's something that Brian Kelly was never really able to do in Baton Rouge.
