Before they go on a tough stretch of SEC games through the second-to-last week of the season, the LSU Tigers have one more opponent they will be heavily favored against in the Southeastern Lions.
The Lions actually have a solid football history in the FCS and have won their conference under their current head coach. Realistically, though, this should be a far easier for the Tigers than the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
If they come out of the gates struggling yet again, some more serious conversations will need to be had.
In all likelihood, they should be able to lock this one up fairly quickly and let some younger players and backups get the chance to make an impact. Here are four players who could benefit from the matchup:
Brian Kelly was able to get Weeks into the lineup last week out of necessity, which means that he is willing to give the freshman chances if there is room. Those were his first snaps of the season.
The goal is likely to have Weeks redshirt after the season, which would put him at just four games he is allowed to enter. If they want to get him more snaps, this is one of the last games that makes sense to set aside some plays for him in the second half.
Berry needs to get more involved every week, but the last time they were willing to give him a couple of chances was agains the Bulldogs. He will likely get the same chance this week and will be hoping for similar results.
The freshman is just such a dynamic runner. It would be shocking if Southeastern had anyone that can really contain Berry in an open field, which is the same thing that Louisiana Tech had to deal with.
Like Weeks, Mathis is a freshman that will eventually be the star of his position room. The defensive lineman, however, has gotten into every game so far.
His career-high for snaps came against the Bulldogs, where he flashed some talents. He has made the most out of limited opportunities and should be able to stand out against whoever the Lions line up against him.
Many want starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier to sit out for this entire game as he heals from his injury. While that won't happen, his leash could be shorter if LSU can run away with the victory.
This feels like the perfect opportunity to get Hurley, a former four-star in his redshirt freshman campaign, his first snaps as a Tiger.
LSU will need to figure out a plan at quarterback once Nussmeier leaves next year, so they might as well get a look and who they already have in the room.
