Rather showering praise on the expected stars of this LSU Tigers team, it is the players who stood out far more than expected who have been under the spotlight after Saturday's win over the Florida Gators.
Near the beginning of the postgame press conference, Tigers head coach Brian Kelly went through a rolodex of defenders he wanted to give credit.
Starting with sophomore safety Dashawn Spears. He doesn't play much; he had just nine snaps against the Gators per Pro Football Focus, but he made the most of his snaps.
Spears had two interceptions, one brought back 58 yards for a touchdown. He was targeted three times in total and allowed just two yards in coverage. He also picked up a stop in run defense. It was a stellar showing for someone with such limited time on the field.
"[It's] because he's been grinding. Every single day he comes in and he's looking for an opportunity to get on the field," said Kelly.
It will be hard to give the safety under 10 snaps against next week, though the other safeties playing well makes it hard. Having too many good players to get them all on the field is an excellent problem to have. Especially when considering how thin the depth chart has been for years.
In the LSU linebacker room, the opportunities came out of necessity. Whit Weeks was thrown out of the game due to a targeting penalty on his third snap. His brother West Weeks got hurt and missed almost half of the snaps.
"We played Tylen Singleton, how many snaps has he had? He's had maybe three snaps all year and he came in the game and played [well]. Davhon Keys had to play the whole game. Zach Weeks, he doesn't even know where the Cox Center is for academic support. I mean he went out there and flew around," said the coach.
Singleton and Weeks are the future of this linebacker room for the Tigers. To already be able to rely on them to be able to take the field against an SEC opponent is a great sign for the future. They may have not had perfect outings, but that is not important for them right now.
Keys, on the other hand, looks nearly ready to be a superstar right now. He's had back-to-back productive weeks and is tied with West Weeks for the team lead in tackles.
LSU fans have spent years begging for the defense to live up to the expectations set by Tigers teams a decade ago. Now, they finally look to really be at that level.
The transfers got their time to shine and will continue to lead this team for the rest of the year. The future looks just as bright.
