The Miami Hurricanes are several hours away from their second straight in-state matchup, this time, against the Florida State Seminoles, who recently suffered a stunning loss to the Virginia Cavaliers, with a final score of 46-38 after double overtime.
That defeat will likely kick them out of the top-10 when the AP poll releases their latest rankings. In a similar fashion to the Florida Gators after their upsetting defeat to the South Florida Bulls in week two, the program hasn't been ranked since.
The Hurricanes enter the new college football week as the only Florida program to remain undefeated.
They arguably have one of the best, if not the best, quarterbacks in the nation in Carson Beck. The redshirt senior has completed 82 of 112 passes, 73.2 percent, for 972 yards and seven touchdowns, along with one rushing touchdown.
Beck has had a tremendous start to the season, so great that he's emerged as an early Heisman Trophy candidate.
Last week, against the Gators, was the first time Beck appeared disturbed. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 160 yards, no passing touchdowns, and one interception. However, the Hurricanes were able to pull through with a victory thanks to their strong run game.
There is no denying Beck's impact on the field, which has begun to shake up NFL draft boards.
In a recent episode of ESPN's "First Draft," featuring Mike Greenberg, Mel Kiper Jr., and Field Yates, they discussed Beck's draft stock based on a comment from a fan:
The Hurricanes found tremendous success with quarterback Cam Ward last season, which led to him being the first overall pick in this year's draft. However, to do it twice in a row with Beck would be a nearly impossible task.
"The problems I see with Carson Beck, the areas that I think would prevent me from having him in that number one overall pick are the ball placements," Yields said. "It's just been way too erratic so far this season. Ball placement has got to be better for Carson Beck. He's been a little bit too trusting at times on throws down the field."
They also mentioned concerns about Beck's lack of dedication to the sport of football and how that could be brought up in NFL interviews.
Kiper came to Beck's defense about it's normal for football players to have other interests and still be great.
"You can have other interests," he said. "Julius Peppers had a lot of other interests coming out. Myles Garrett had a lot of other interests coming out. I'm not as worried about that."
Beck is already gaining the attention of many NFL teams and that's expected to continue, especially if the Hurricanes continue to stack wins.
A team that could be an ideal situation is the Las Vegas Raiders; however, it's too early to predict which teams may fall in what draft position.
Beck's Heisman stock took a hit after his poor performance against the Gators, but he has a tremendous shot to rebuild it against the Seminoles on Saturday.
