The Miami Hurricanes prepare for another glorious in-state battle against the Florida Gators. They've established themselves as one of the most exciting teams in college football. The offense is proven to score in multiple ways, plus the defense comes through with crucial stops. They aren't exactly flashy, but the team has pulled together tremendous wins.
Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck has led the way, while also having a tremendous comeback story. After his final season with Georgia, which ended on a sour note, there were questions about whether or not he could perform at a high level again.
Last year, Beck saw a significant decline in his completion percentage, dropping to 64.7, and finished in a three-way tie for the most interceptions in the SEC, with 12. The lack of production led to a fallout from the Heisman trophy race. The UCL injury added extra concern about his ability to be productive, which he suffered in the championship game against Texas.
However, to begin his Miami stint, Beck has slammed all concerns. In the first three games of the season, he's thrown for an average of 270.7 yards and scored seven touchdowns. The high-level production and winning are building a tremendous case for the Heisman.
After the Hurricanes' great victory over the South Florida Bulls, with a final score of 49-12, he completed 23 of 28 passes for 340 yards, the most so far in a single game this season, and three touchdowns. Beck has exceeded himself in passing yards after each matchup.
In a recent article by On3, voters provided an update on their Heisman player rankings after week three, which saw Beck make the jump to third.
"Beck's playing as well as anyone in the country right now," they wrote.
The Hurricanes couldn't have been a more perfect fit for the redshirt senior. Their offensive line has done a tremendous job of protecting him, only allowing two sacks in three games, which helps him find success.
Beck was behind two quarterbacks: Oklahoma's John Mateer and Florida State's Tommy Castellanos. However, there's a case that he should be at the top of the list.
Beck will have a chance to display another excellent performance against the Gators, at home, on national television, College GameDay. If he manages to exceed last week's stats, there is no denying his legitimacy as a Heisman candidate.
If Beck manages to pull through for the season and win the award, he'll be the first Hurricane player to do so since quarterback Gino Torretta in 1992.
