There really wasn't a whole lot to be excited about in the first half tonight. Michigan's offense looked stale and Michigan State looked even worse. The Spartans were able to get a decent scoring drive going but outside of that their offense could not move the ball. MSU's first three series were three and outs and a fumble. I'm not sure if that's a credit to Michigan's defense or MSU just being bad at moving the ball. Jyaire Hill missed two opportunities for an interception that could have been made fairly easily.
For the final drive of the half the Wolverine's got the ball back with just under a minute and were able to move the ball down to midfield. Then, to the surprise of everyone around me here in the media booth, they let the clock run out instead of heaving the ball down to the end zone. I am not sure why they moved the ball so far with short passes and making sure the receivers got out of bounds to just let the clock run down after getting into Hail Mary range.
Overall Michigan needs to figure out a way to get their players open. They need to figure out a scheme to get the receivers in space downfield instead of just heaving it to well-covered receivers. Semaj Morgan also dropped a very catchable ball thrown to him on the final drive of the half. It seemed like he wasn't even looking for the ball after his break to get open. I understand that Michigan is a run-first team, and wants to bully their opponent in the trenches, but 59 yards passing in the first half is unacceptable with Bryce Underwood's arm talent.
I am happy with Michigan's defense overall. They did allow a couple of big runs that got the Spartans into scoring position, but they held Aidan Chiles to just 26 yards passing in the first half.
