The game in Ann Arbor tonight is not expected to be a close one. Per FanDuel, the Wolverines are 21.5-point favorites over Purdue. Michigan hasn't exactly been explosive on offense, but they're just a lot more talented than the Boilers. It's going to be interesting to see if running back Justice Haynes plays as injury rumors have been swirling and there's always some curiosity when it comes to quarterback Bryce Underwood and how he'll be used. Here's how we see it going.
Michigan’s powerful running game and disciplined defense should set the tone early, allowing them to control the clock and keep Purdue’s offense in check.
If the Wolverines maintain their balance between the run and pass while avoiding turnovers, they should steadily pull away. Purdue has struggled defensively this season, especially against strong offensive lines, which gives Michigan’s playmakers plenty of room to shine. I’m expecting to see a lot of yards and touchdowns from the Wolverines running backs even if Justice Haynes is unable to play.
Purdue’s weak secondary will allow Bryce Underwood to throw some deep passes and throw for over 175 yards with Andrew Marsh, Marlin Klein and Donaven McCulley being his top targets.
The energy at home in Ann Arbor should also give the Wolverines a boost as they look to solidify their playoff hopes. Expect Michigan to dominate on both sides of the ball and win comfortably by multiple scores.
Michigan 34, Purdue 10
I just don't see Purdue having any answers on either side of the ball. Michigan is too big, too fast and too talented compared to the Boilers on offense and defense.
No one is quite sure how healthy Justice Haynes is. If he does play, how much will he be used and how effective will he be? But, if he's out, enter Jordan Marshall. I don't think it matters who is in the backfield for Michigan, they're going to be successful against Purdue.
Through the air, this feels like a good game to get Underwood lathered up. It's at home, it's at night and it's against an inferior opponent. This is a perfect opportunity to let him air it out a bit and form some chemistry with his receivers. Scheme some guys open, send some receivers deep and let Underwood wing it around.
Also, I want to see Underwood used as a runner. Let him keep some zone reads, draw up some QB power and get him out on the edge and let him pull it down and go. He's too good of an athlete to keep him in the pocket all day long.
On defense, Wink Martindale is going to get after Purdue all day long. Michigan's talented edge rushers and linebackers are going to make it very hard for the Boilers to get it going on offense. I don't think Purdue finds the end zone tonight.
