The UNC football program has continued to improve week in and week out and almost pulled off its biggest win of the season against a top-15 Virginia opponent on Saturday.
Trying to win the game, North Carolina decided to go for two in overtime. Instead of converting, the Tar Heels were stopped, and they ended up losing the game. Bill Belichick was questioned after the game about why he decided to go for two, and while I understand the question, he had the perfect response.
"Just trying to win the game," he said, per ESPN.
For a team struggling as much as UNC has to beat some of the top teams in the ACC, and even an ACC game at this point, Belichick has to do whatever he can to win a game.
If he believed he had an opportunity to win that game just by going for two, which would’ve won them the game, his thinking is right.
There hasn't been much to suggest that UNC can go back on defense and get a big stop against a decent Virginia offense.
It's tough to say there should be any moral victories when it comes to what UNC has done this year. When it hired Belichick to be its head coach, the hope was that he would eventually turn the Tar Heels into a national powerhouse.
However, that's much easier said than done, and all he's looking for right now is for the team to improve daily, something he's stated many times.
"We've spent more time with these guys, and everybody's improving," Belichick said. "Some guys are getting more playing time or are being used in different roles as we see ways for them to help the team be productive. It's evolving. Some of it is the players improving, and some of it is identifying things guys can do to help us."
UNC will have a few challenging games at the back end of the season, taking on a decent Syracuse team and its rival Duke at the end of November.
If UNC can at least come away with some wins, we might look at this year as less of a disappointment than it seems.
