It's obvious that a lot hasn't gone right for the UNC football program this year, sitting at 0-3 in the ACC and 2-5 overall.

It's been as disappointing as anybody could’ve ever imagined, but there are a few different reasons for that. If one problem has been evident, it's that UNC hasn't had the quarterback play that it has been hoping for. Sophomore Gio Lopez has had the bulk of the action, throwing for 805 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.

For UNC to be the team it’s looking to be in the future, it needs a lot more from its starting quarterback. Lopez had a better game against UVA, throwing for 208 yards and a touchdown, but also turned the ball over twice.

With that being a question UNC has to answer moving forward, general manager Mike Lombardi shared some thoughts on what might change. With Bryce Baker and Au’Tori Newkirk as freshman quarterbacks to look out for in the future, it doesn't sound like the Tar Heels are going to make a change to their current setup anytime in the near future.

“To me, it’s a little bit harder, because we have Max behind Gio, and they’ve got so much experience,” Lombardi said, per Yahoo. “What Bill won’t do is give a job to somebody unless they earn it, and especially at the quarterback position.”

While it’s exciting to think about what UNC football might be in the future, the quarterback position is also something to figure out. If UNC wants to be the team it is looking to be, it starts on that front.

It'll be interesting to see if UNC wants to add another quarterback from the transfer portal, as that's always a possibility.

Towards the back end of the season, especially if UNC continues to lose games, it might be a better idea to give one of the freshmen a look. There isn't much reason for UNC to continue running Lopez out there, considering its season is pretty much as good as done already.

There's a chance to get some wins, but developing is more important at this stage.
