History is made as Notre Dame and Auburn ignite a new rivalry with a thrilling home-and-home series. Prepare for gridiron fireworks!
Notre Dame has gotten one step closer to finalizing its 2027 and 2028 schedules as the program announced that it has scheduled a home-and-home series with the Auburn Tigers. This will be the first ever matchup between Notre Dame and Auburn.
The first matchup will be on September 25th during the 2027 season. That game will be played inside Notre Dame Stadium. The following season the Irish will head to Jordan-Hare Stadium to take on the Tigers on October 28th. Notre Dame has not played a game in the state of Alabama since 1986, when the Irish headed to Birmingham to play the No. 2 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. According to the Notre Dame press release, this will be Auburn's first game in the state of Indiana.
Notre Dame now has eight opponents scheduled for the 2027 season and they have 10 opponents scheduled for the 2028 season.
Notre Dame now has three SEC opponents on the 2028 schedule, with the Tigers joining Texas (September 9) and Arkansas (September 16). That season will also be the first time Notre Dame plays Arkansas in a home contest. The 56-13 win over the Razorbacks in September was the first matchup between those two programs.
The Fighting Irish old a 51-27 all-time record against SEC opponents. Notre Dame currently has a 4-1 record against SEC opponents during the Marcus Freeman era. Notre Dame beat South Carolina (45-38) in the Gator Bowl following the 2022 season. It beat Texas A&M (23-13) on the road last season and then beat SEC Champ Georgia (23-10) in the Sugar Bowl as part of the 2024 College Football Playoff. Notre Dame dropped a home game to Texas A&M (41-40) in September of this season but then went on the road and pounded Arkansas (56-13) two weeks later.
Notre Dame is making a concerted effort to play more SEC teams in the future. The upcoming matchup against Auburn is one just one example. Notre Dame also plays Texas in 2028 and 2029, it plays Alabama in 2029 and 2030, and plays Florida in 2031 and 2032.
