The Ohio State Buckeyes faced their toughest test so far this season on Saturday. They battled to come out of the game with a "blue collar" victory.
The game got off to a very slow start for Ohio State as again, they showed some low red zone struggles on offense. Their very first drive of the game started at the 50-yard line, and right away, the Buckeyes were thinking about getting an early seven-point victory.
Instead of punching the ball into the endzone, they drove it all the way down to the four-yard line and faced a 4th and 1. The play call was a run for CJ Donaldson, and he was stuffed at the line of scrimmage. The Buckeyes came up empty, deep in the red zone again.
Ohio State's defense gave up yards throughout the field, but when it was time to buckle down in the low red zone, they did it time and time again. Three times the Washington Huskies drove the ball inside the twenty, and all they had to show for it was six points on the entire afternoon.
The Ohio State defense was special again on Saturday. It was Caden Curry who led the way for the Buckeyes. Curry finished with 11 total tackles, nine solo stops, five tackles for loss, and three sacks against the Huskies. Play after play, Curry was making his presence felt and was one of the MVP's for the Buckeyes.
Another Buckeye that stood out on Saturday was Arvell Reese. Reese continues to show week in and week out that he might be one of the top defensive players in the county. He again was incredible on Saturday and was a major matchup nightmare.
Reese finished with five tackles, three of which were solo tackles. While he didn't register a sack or a tackle for loss, he was an issue for the Huskies to deal with. He was primarily in a spy technique just waiting for Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr. to take off running. He chased him down nearly every time.
The Buckeyes were stagnant to start the game on offense. They employed a very similar game plan to their Texas attack, where they were trying to protect Julian Sayin from making any mistakes. As a result, the Buckeyes needed a third and 11 conversion for a touchdown to take a 7-3 lead and jump-start the offense.
That spark carried into the second half. Sayin relaxed and was much more comfortable for the Buckeyes, and it showed. He finished 23-for-28 for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Jeremiah Smith hauled in 8 catches for 81 yards and a score.
The Buckeyes move to 4-0 on the season and next up is a night home game against PJ Fleck and the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
