As fall camp neared its end in early August, Julian Sayin won the Ohio State starting quarterback position over Lincoln Kienholz, earning the keys to drive Ohio State football forward.
Since being named the starter, Sayin has done everything to take control of the position and show his coaches, teammates, and Buckeye Nation that he has what it takes to lead the scarlet and gray to another national championship.
Through three weeks, Sayin is the most accurate passer in America on throws over 20 yards; surprisingly, he has a perfect completion rate on throws of that length. The next closest quarterback is SMU’s Kevin Jennings, at 72.7%, which is great but nowhere near Sayin.
Sayin does have a cheat code with his two future first-round wide receivers, Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate, who make it easy to toss the ball down the field. However, perfection from under center isn’t normal, regardless of who catches the ball.

The most impressive performance in Sayin’s young career came in the season opener against the Texas Longhorns. In the most-viewed game in the history of Week 1, Sayin did precisely what he needed to do to win the football game. It wasn’t perfect. At times, it wasn’t even pretty. But he got the job done.
In Week 2 and Week 3, he let the ball fly against inferior competition, putting his accuracy on display for the entire world to see. Long connections to Smith and Tate have become a staple of the Buckeyes' passing attack on Saturdays. They are a weapon that every opponent will have to commit a lot of time and energy to trying to defend.
The Buckeyes' next challenge is the start of their Big Ten schedule. After the Week 4 bye, they head to the upper northwest for a date with the Washington Huskies in Week 5. This game against the Huskies marks the beginning of a critical football stretch, one that Ohio State must dominate.
After Washington, the Buckeyes host Minnesota before back-to-back trips to Illinois and Wisconsin. Three of Sayin’s next four starts are going to be on the road in tough environments. Washington has a historically rowdy following, while the top-10 Illini dream of being in the College Football Playoff picture. To cap it all, Ohio State travels to Madison.
It's not an easy stretch, but it's the next test for the young Buckeye. To be successful here, Sayin needs to continue doing what he has been doing: managing the offense.
He currently has the keys to a high-powered sports car and is doing a good job of keeping it between the lines and moving forward. If he keeps throwing the ball deep, the Buckeyes will have a great chance to continue winning football games on their quest to repeat as champions in 2025.
