STILLWATER, Okla. -
Every Cowgirl played and just about every Cowgirl scored as the Oklahoma State women’s basketball team recorded their third win of the season and pummeled the Langston Lady Lions, on Thursday night, winning 105 to 35.
The Oklahoma State Cowgirls, led by Lena Girardi, posted a win against the Lions on Thursday night, and they did it in utmost convincing fashion. Offensively and defensively, the Pokes could not be slowed down and did not allow their opponent any “gimmes”.
Oklahoma State’s Lena Girardi scored 29 points and set a program record for most 3-pointers in a game by a freshman with nine. Micah Gray and Amari Whiting each scored 15 points, Haleigh Timmer had 13. Coming off the bench, Jadyn Wooten posted 10 points for Oklahoma State, who led 35-4 after the first period.
The Cowgirls shot 53.7% from the field with just about a half of their buckets coming from beyond the three point line, where Oklahoma State went 18 of 39. The aforementioned freshman, Girardi, was responsible for half of the Cowgirls made three pointers. Oklahoma State saw huge success in the rebounding category and outrebounded the Langston Lady Lions 47 to 18. The Cowgirls also dominated in the assist category, posting a 26 to 3 advantage over their Thursday night opponent.
Langston Lady Lion, Areyanna Hunter, led her team in scoring with eight points. The Lions, which advanced to the final round of 16 in last year's NAIA national tournament, shot only 21%, going 9 of 43.
The Cowgirls were giving away no freebies on Thursday night as they posted a season-high 33 points off ofturnovers and were able to manage 25 second chance points. Again, every Cowgirl played and the Oklahoma State bench unit provided almost half of their point total, posting 48 of the 105 team points on the evening.
The Cowgirls posted their third win of the season and will now get a two-day breather before having to face in-state foe, Oral Roberts.
Oklahoma State head coach, Jacie Hoyt, has her team starting off hot to begin the season, even as they miss, key player, Macey Huard, who is out for the season due to a foot injury.
