The Oklahoma State Cowboys could be closing in on their next head coach

Are the Cowboys getting closer to finding their new head football coach?

There are rumors flying around and a few updates that make it seem that the Cowboys could be closing in on their new head coach for the 2026 football season.

Names like Zac Robinson, Collin Klein, and Alex Golesh have been circling in conversation around Stillwater.

Though there is another “Texas ties” coach who is gaining a lot of traction, that coach being University of North Texas head coach, Eric Morris.

North Texas was recently on a bye week and, according to reliable Cowboy sources, Eric Morris was interviewed by Oklahoma State. All reports indicating that Oklahoma State Athletic Director, Chad Weiberg, and others were very impressed with Morris’ interview.

Pete Mundo, of Heartland College Sports, interviewed Andy Staples, of On3, this past Thursday.

In the interview, Mundo asks Staples, “Oklahoma State, where would you go if you were the Cowboys with all of these other massive openings out there?”

“Denton, Texas. I’d get Eric Morris. I’d have him go bring his quarterback, bring his defensive coordinator, Skyler Cassity, who just hired and brought most of the Sam Houston defense with them”, replied Staples. He continues on, “I’d have them port everything and just start winning immediately.” Staples believes the Cowboys are in position to do just that.

The North Texas Mean Green were on bye during Week 11 (Nov 3-9) but have got out to an impressive 8-1 overall record. Though the Mean Green’s only loss came at the hands of other Oklahoma State coaching search candidate, Alex Golesh, head coach of the University of South Florida.

So why Morris then, over Golesh?

According to reports, it seems that Oklahoma State likes both candidates and it feels like, right now, these could be the top two names on a coaching search that is drawing to an end.

While the Cowboys would be in a great place to land either candidate, Golesh has garnered a lot of attention from other schools who are better off financially and currently in better NIL position than Oklahoma State.

This North Texas team, led by Morris, currently boasts the number one offense in the nation and lead the country in points per game (ppg). They are also second in the country when it comes to yards per game (ypg) and points per play (ppp). If that’s not convincing enough to hire Morris, you can also consider other factors.

If Oklahoma State were to hire Eric Morris, he would likely bring a lot with him, including the current North Texas quarterback, Drew Mestemaker, who is having quite the season. Mestemaker is currently ninth in the country in total passing yards, tied for ninth in passing touchdowns, and has only thrown four interceptions through nine games.

Former Oklahoma State wide receiver commit, Jabarie Thorton, decommitted after Mike Gundy was fired. Thorton then committed to North Texas on November 2nd. If Oklahoma State were to hire Eric Morris, Thornton would likely return to the Cowboy fold of commits.

I believe we’ll know who Oklahoma State’s next head coach is in just three short weeks from right now.

Could it be former Cowboys QB, Zac Robinson?

Could Oklahoma State court USF’s Alex Golesh away from bigger schools?

Is A&M’s Collin Klein holding out for the Kansas State job?

Or will it be North Texas head coach, Eric Morris?

I believe Morris is the right guy for the Cowboys moving forward. Boone Pickens Stadium could sure use and would be thrilled to see his offensive firepower in Stillwater.
