Breaking down Oklahoma State interim head coach Doug Meacham's top points from the 42-0 obliteration against Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas - Oklahoma State gets shut out on Saturday, the last time being November 2024, 52-0 against Colorado. Twice in a calendar year, against Big 12 opponents, doesn’t bode well for favorable optics.

Here are the quick topics Oklahoma State’s interim head coach, Doug Meacham, noted on in his post-game press conference.

    - Dreadful Start:

Oklahoma State wasn’t competitive in this game and it showed from the beginning. J. Williams, for Texas Tech, took the opening kickoff to the house, for 99 yards, out of the gate. From then on, it was open season on the Cowboys. Oklahoma State cannot get down early if it hopes to get in the win column again this season.

    - Quarterback Woes:

Zane Flores was initially not listed on the availability report, giving Oklahoma State fans hope that he’d replace Jackson V, the WR/QB, as the starting quarterback on Saturday. That was not the case, as Jackson V played the entire first half and was replaced by Noah Walters in the 3rd quarter.

    - Regarding the quarterback position going forward, Meacham had this to say (on Zane):

“I think we probably need to sit down and figure that out. Obviously, he was the starter before, and the reason he was the starter is because we thought he was the best one. A lot of the time I’ve always believed that you can’t lose your job over an injury.  Ya know, you got hurt. It’s no one’s fault. So I would think naturally hewould be the guy when he’s ready to go. That’s how I would apply it, but we’ll figure it out. You don’t want anybody to have a head start, a competitive advantage on who we’re playing at quarterback, so I’m gonna kinda maybe say we’re not sure right now.”

    - QB @ Kansas:

Oklahoma State fans thought they might get a glimpse at Zane Flores for the first time in a few weeks since Flores went down vs Arizona. It wouldn’t have mattered, as Texas Tech went on a “points party” early on in Saturday’s matchup. Can Oklahoma State potentially get Hauss Hejny back for the matchup against the Jayhawks in Lawrence?

    - No Rodney Fields Jr.:

Oklahoma State was without Rodney Fields Jr. on Saturday. It was evident, too. Oklahoma State, instead, featured Sesi Valahi and Trent Howland, in place of Fields Jr. That resulted in Oklahoma State being scoreless for the first time this season, despite being, now, 1-7. Oklahoma State travels to Lawrence, Kansas to face the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday, November 1. The Cowboys will look to play much better than their abysmal road trip in west Texas.
