Storylines:
Oklahoma State has three games left on the schedule. They haven’t been on the right side of the win column since the end of August. Can they get a dub in the final three games? I’m not quite sure. The Kansas State Wildcats had aspirations for a Big 12 Championship run this season. It was dependent on their quarterback, Avery Johnson. For the most part, he’s been lackluster. Kansas State needs two wins in their last three games to be bowl eligible, can they do it? It will start with attempting to beat Oklahoma State, like the last eight opponents have. I’d say they have a pretty decent chance at getting the first of three.
Players to Watch:
Oklahoma State Cowboys
(QB) Zane Flores –
Ultimately, at this point, Zane Flores, with three games left to play in the season, is playing for his spot on next year’s roster. Will the new Oklahoma State head coach bring a quarterback with him? Will Hauss Hejny, who only played one quarter this season, return, as Doug Meacham will most likely depart from the program? Will there be an additional potential starting candidate for the Cowboys starting quarterback job? There are a lot of questions surrounding the source of the Cowboys woes this season going into next season. If Flores would like to remain the starter, he will need to shine in the final three games of the season, work on his game in the off-season and then compete for the job in camp in 2026. Is that going to be too much? Will Flores transfer if he’s not guaranteed the 2026 starting job? Though Oklahoma State’s season was over from pretty much the beginning, there are other questions to be answered in the meantime. The quarterback position is one of them and Flores will need to show out for him to be considered as the starter or even the backup in 2026. He could start that campaign for his return as starter against the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday.
(LB) Bryan McCoy Jr. -
Usually this ‘Player To Watch’ spot has been reserved for Cowboys LB, Wendell Gregory. To switch, we’ll highlight McCoy Jr, who leads the Cowboys in tackles. To be fair, there are others on this Cowboys defense who are difference makers. I’d be remiss if all I did was shoutout Gregory each and every week. Though the Cowboys need to make it their utmost priority to retain Gregory. However, McCoy Jr has been quietly effective for the Cowboys this year. McCoy, combined with Gregory, will need to be defensive stalwarts on Saturday against mobile quarterback, Avery Johnson, if the Cowboys want any chance at victory over the Kansas State Wildcats.
Kansas State Wildcats
(QB) Avery Johnson -
Johnson is mobile. Johnson is fast. Johnson has an arm. Johnson can beat you by himself. Johnson can also be wildly inconsistent. And Johnson can also lose you the game. Which Avery Johnson are we going to see in Stillwater on Saturday? Are we going to see the Avery that could’ve been the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year? Or will we see the Avery Johnsonthat has been relatively disappointing for the Manhattan Purple Cats this year? Stay tuned.
(LB) Austin Romaine -
Austin Romaine's 2024 season with Kansas State was a breakout year, recording 96 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 3 forced fumbles. He was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team and was also ranked among the top linebackers in the Power Four by Pro Football Focus (PFF). His 2025 season stats, through a portion of the season, include 66 total tackles and 41 solo tackles. He will be instrumental in stopping any run game schemes Oklahoma State may try to throw at him and the Kansas State defense.
Prediction: Kansas State 33, Oklahoma State 20
Both teams are coming off of a bye week. I like Klieman over Meacham, in terms of who has their team more ready. Kansas State is on the verge of becoming bowl eligible, while Oklahoma State’s season has been over from the start. I like this game to be competitive from start to finish but like the Purple Cats to come out on top, but not cover, 33-20.
