Rankings: Oklahoma (No. 11 CFP, No. 11 AP, No. 10 Coaches), Alabama (No. 4 CFP, No. 4 AP, No. 4 Coaches)

No. 1: Can the Sooners force pressure on Ty Simpson?

The biggest key to Oklahoma’s success in beating Alabama will come down to whether or not they can get after quarterback Ty Simpson. Alabama’s offensive line has had its fair share of struggles this season, giving up 1.8 sacks per game, which ranks No. 65 in the FBS. Oklahoma has one of the best pass-rushing defenses in the country, with a sack rate of 11.19%, which slots them No. 2 in the FBS. The Sooners, however, could be without their top pass rusher, R Mason Thomas, who remains questionable with a quad injury.

No. 2: Has the flip switched for John Mateer?

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer had his struggles in the games following his return from hand surgery, but he might have turned a corner. In the second half of the Tennessee game, Mateer finally looked like his prior self, helping propel the Sooners to a 33-27 victory off of 159 passing yards and running for 80 yards, which included a clinching touchdown with less than two minutes to play. Mateer has a chance to exploit Alabama’s pass defense, which gives up a 61.57% completion rate, putting them No. 60 in the FBS.

No. 3: Will Oklahoma be able to slow down Ryan Williams?

As prolific as Alabama’s offense has been, one of the biggest disappointments this season has been the lack of production from wide receiver Ryan Williams. Williams had an impressive freshman campaign and was expected to be one of the top players in college football this season. Instead, he has struggled with injuries, having been held to just 36 catches for 528 receiving yards. With Gentry Williams doubtful, the Sooners will need the rest of the secondary to step up and minimize Williams’ impact. He’s capable of going off at any given time, but so far this season he has only one game with 100 receiving yards or more (9/13 vs. Wisconsin, 165 receiving yards).

    Prediction: Alabama 27-24

We saw what happened the last time Oklahoma faced an explosive offense with an elite quarterback against Ole Miss; the Sooners’ offense could not keep up. Right now, I trust Ty Simpson to make more plays than John Mateer, and that ends up being the difference in the outcome with a close win for the Crimson Tide.
