As we continue to hear all of the noise about Kalen DeBoer out of the University of Alabama, there are a lot of factors that have to be considered when Penn State thinks about hiring him.
From the sound of things, he’s certainly on Penn State's radar, and considering the head coaching search has already spanned for longer than a month, if DeBoer weren't interested in coaching at Penn State, I think it feels relatively safe to say that he would’ve said that already.
Perhaps he's just protecting himself, as some have suggested that Penn State might have an opportunity to land him as its next head coach due to Alabama getting rid of him.
However, considering Alabama is still in a playoff mix, and one of the better teams in the SEC despite a tough loss against Oklahoma last weekend, it’d make more sense if he had come out and said he didn't want the job.
Nonetheless, that hasn't happened.
The next question was considered by Frank Bodani of the York Daily Record, who named DeBoer one of the top five candidates for Penn State, wondering if he'd be willing to take the job before Alabama finds out if it makes the playoffs or not.
“The seat gets hot at Alabama if you're not challenging for national titles. Rumors are floating that Kalen DeBoer (9-4 last year; 8-2 this season) may be open to a change of coaching scenery. He's been a winner everywhere he's gone, including taking Washington to the national title game after the 2023 season.
“DeBoer, 51, may well be the top Penn State choice, if he's truly interested in moving on now,” he wrote. “Would the Lions wait for him if the Crimson Tide make the playoffs?”
The quicker Penn State has a head coach, the better position it'd likely be in.
The harsh reality of recruiting nowadays is that Penn State will need a coach as soon as possible.
I don't think it's the biggest deal if Penn State doesn't find its next head coach for the next few days, but it’d probably be better if it has one in early December.
