If somebody had said, entering the season, that Penn State football would be 0-4 in the Big Ten and 3-4 overall, perhaps not even becoming bowl-eligible, I would have laughed.
It's just been a year that nobody could’ve ever expected, and something the program is obviously hoping to figure out after moving on from James Franklin.
When speaking about the situation, it sounds like the players and coaching staff understand just how bad things have been.
We could even tip our caps to the Iowa and Oregon losses. Oregon is an incredible program, and Iowa is always respectable.
However, when we start factoring in losses to Northwestern and UCLA, it's evident that things are much worse than anybody would’ve imagined.
“You’ve got to give your soul,” Terry Smith said, per SI. “Things aren't going our way right now, but the only way to get out of the storm is to run through the storm. And we're going to run through the storm until we get out of the storm, and we'll come out and the sun will shine on us, and we'll all be better.”
“The message right now is, stay together,” Smith said. “We went and fought. I told you guys last week that we’ll get those guys to play hard. They played extremely hard. They left it up there, and now the key is, finish. There’s plays on the offense, the defense, the special teams where we’re leaving game-changing plays out there. We’ve got to close.”
The storm is true, and if there's one thing that Smith has said better than anyone, it's that Penn State has to stick together.
If the program continues to do what it's done over the past four weeks, things might get even uglier.
This is clearly not a CFP team at this point, so the next hope has to be trying to get into a decent bowl game.
If Penn State were to win out, I could imagine a scenario where they have a chance at playing in a decent bowl game, but the chances of Penn State beating Ohio State and Indiana right now seem very slim.
