As we've mentioned multiple times, it's not unfair for some to say that Penn State isn't the best job opening on the market.
While I still personally believe that Penn State is just as good a job as any opening in the nation, if not the best due to the program's history, the recruiting aspect has to be factored in.
For former Ohio State coach and college football legend Urban Meyer, that's why he ranked the Nittany Lions as the third-best opening right now behind Florida and LSU.
“First of all, I must say that of all the blue bloods … they’re all open, I don’t know if that’s happened in recent history,” Meyer said, per On3. “But I’d say just because of the LSU and Florida, because the talent level, the talent pool, is within a three hour radius of your school.
“You have LSU, you have Florida. I would say Florida (is the best), just because of the dysfunction right now (at LSU). They don’t have an athletic director … Everybody loves (the governor) down there, but they better get an AD in place pretty quick before … Really good head coaches will walk away from this and say ‘I’m not sure I want to do that.’ Florida No. 1, LSU at (No. 2), Penn State No. 3. I just think it’s a little harder to recruit right now, just because the population shift has gone down south. You can’t just say Western, PA and Philadelphia and New Jersey. That’s kind of where they used to get their players. So I would go: Florida, LSU and Penn State.”
Many Penn State fans would love to see Meyer come out of retirement to coach, but he's debunked any of those rumors over the past few days.
Meyer seems to be having a great time doing media nowadays, and with the NIL and transfer portal situation, it's much easier for him to call it what it is and enjoy his life, frankly.
While I think his comments are important, I also understand that if Penn State were to offer a coach as much money as possible, it's very likely that it’d walk away with the head coach it's looking for.
