Syracuse enters its game against Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Saturday as a massive underdog.
ESPN Bet lists the No. 7 Yellow Jackets (7-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) as 16 ½-point favorites, and the game largely could be decided at the quarterback position.
The Orange (3-4, 1-3 ACC) are unsettled at quarterback, struggling since veteran transfer Steve Angeli suffered a torn Achilles in Week 4. And Georgia Tech is getting exceptional quarterback play from Haynes King, in his third season as the Yellow Jackets’ starter.
On the season, King is 108-of-153 passing (70.6%) for 1,176 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He’s added 101 carries for 560 yards and 10 touchdowns.
In 30 games as the Georgia Tech starter, he has thrown for 6,132 yards and 45 touchdowns and rushed for 1,884 yards with 31 scores.
On the other sideline, head coach Fran Brown committed this week to Angeli’s replacement, LSU transfer Rickie Collins.
Collins has started the past three games – all losses – and completed 68 of 127 passes (53.5%) for 733 yards, connecting with his receivers for five touchdowns, outweighed by eight interceptions.
“I’ve got faith in Rickie,” Brown said earlier this week. “We’re praying that it clicks for him completely and he can come out and have a good week.”
Luke Carney, a freshman, is Collins’ backup.
The Orange will need to find a way to get into the end zone against Georgia Tech’s defense, which is allowing an average of 20.6 points per game.
Syracuse is scoring 26.7 points but allowing 29.9 points.
The Orange have scored just 34 points over the three games since Angeli left the lineup.
